Unlike
most martial art schools, Rose and River only uses two belts.
All other ranks are acknowledged by sashes. Belts and sashes
have important meanings at our school. They are awarded to
students to recognize their achievement in the art. In Poekoelan
there are fewer ranks than many systems and progression is
slower. Martial Arts is not for the impatient.
Cun
Tao
A
student starts off with a white belt, a simple piece of cloth
tied around the waist. Traditionally this signifies purity
and a willingness to learn. Sometimes this mind set is called
"the empty cup". As the student continues to train, the belt
gradually becomes dirtier. Since we do not normally practice
outside in the dirt, the black stripes represent how "dirty"
the belt has become. Every student's belt should be tied at
the hip, not in front.
The
Cun Tao ranks are:

Poekoelan,
3rd Phase
After
passing the timed test, the student receives a white sash.
White sashes symbolize purity, innocence, and inexperience.
A student learns to be humble and to respect his or her instructors.
The sashes are wider and less rigid. Like the belt in the
Cun Tao classes, sashes are tied at the hip.
The
3rd Phase ranks are:

Belt
The
black belt is the only actual belt other than the white belt.
All the intervening sashes are merely progress indicators.
As stated in the Cun Tao section, a student starts with a
pure white belt. Traditionally, this would be the only belt
given to the student. As the student trains, the belt gets
darker and darker until it becomes black with dirt, sweat,
and blood.
*Third
Phase is an advanced class that cun tao students are not permitted
to participate in. In this way, cun tao students concentrate
on their self-defense holds. On rare occasions, however, they
may join certain parts of the class by invitation.
