Cun
Tao
Cun
Tao is the basis of the system of Poekoelan Tjimindie Kung
Fu. In the Cun Tao class, a student will learn more than 100
self defense situations--including defenses against gun, knife,
and rifle.
It is in this class that the student begins to build the foundation
that will be the basis for his or her self expression in the
more advanced levels. The student is exposed to the totem
animals of the style and is encouraged to explore how each
animal moves in terms of the self defense holds.
In addition to the self defense holds, the student begins
to learn the two fundamental forms. The first develops the
ability to move and strike at the same time, while the second
teaches some of the many hand strikes used in Poekoelan.
Once
a student passes the Cun Tao phase of his or her training, they
enter Third Phase. In this phase, the student continues to work
on the self defense holds, improving speed and precision. They
also begin to learn some of the traditional forms (lunkas),
as well as creating their own forms (kumbongs). During this
time, the student is encouraged to begin to develop an affinity
for one or more of the totem animals. This does not mean that
the others are ignored.
Also during this phase, the student begins to learn fighting
techniques. This is where the animal affinities come into
play as the student takes on the fighting characteristics
of their chosen animal or animals.
At this time in training, the student begins to be pushed
and trained in arenas other than physical exertion. A student
begins to learn awareness of his surroundings. They also learns
to act with thought and intention rather than merely reacting
to a situation.
Poekoelan
3rd Phase-
upper ranks
By
the time students enter this phase of their training, they have
achieved the rank of green sash. Most likely they have been
teaching Cun Tao classes for a while. Although the previous
ranks were very challenging, this is where students learn to
go beyond their own expectations and become heir to the traditions
and meanings of Poekoelan Tjimindie Kung Fu. It is important
to note that few people enter into the upper ranks of third
phase training--and of those who do, not everyone will stay.
During this part of third phase training, students begin learning
advanced lunkas and sets, the advanced self defense holds,
advanced fighting stances, and the spirit-energy aspects of
the art.
Third phase is not the end of a student's training. Nor is
it truly the beginning. This is the part of training where
a student has learned and developed a solid foundation of
skills, habits, and beliefs. It is at this time that the student
begins to explore and expand upon his or her previous training,
taking it to a different level and truly become the rose--ever
growing, ever beautiful, ever dangerous, and ever its self.
